This guide shows how to install the Sense on sites with a smart meter HAN (RJ-45). If you don't have a smart meter on your site, follow this guide.
☝️ Some smart meters have certain requirements and specifications that must be taken into account when installing the Sense.
In the package, you will get a Zaptec Sense, a CAT6 communication cable RJ45 port, and two types of suspension.
Note! The HAN port needs to be open for the Sense to work.Opening the HAN port
- Plug Zaptec Sense into the meters HAN-port with the included CAT6 communication cable. This will take approximately 3 minutes. Before installation Sense will flash orange
- If the HAN port is already in use it is possible to connect Y-splitter, so that several devices can use the same port on the AMS. For this to work you will need an external power supply. The Sense has an input for micro USB ( HUNN connection) so that it is easy to use a normal micro USB cable ( HANN connection), e.g. phone charger 5VDC with Micro USB-B connector.
Zaptec Sense HAN supports WiFi 2,4GHz and does not have an Ethernet port. For more explanation about network connection click here.
Install Sense in the Zaptec app
The next step is to set up the product in the Zaptec app.
- From the Home, tap the three-dot icon at the top-right
- Tap Install product or swipe right on the home screen and press the Add new button
- Scan the QR- code and follow the instructions on the screen
- When you enter the PIN code, the app will ask you to set the main fuse, confirm connection to the e-meter, and connect to a network
Pair your Zaptec Sense with your installation. If you have yet to create an installation, press Pair with a charger and add the serial number.
The Sense will now be added to your active add-on services in the app.
Under Installation, choose Zaptec Services, and select the Zaptec Sense tab
On this screen, you will see different settings on the module such as Network Status, IP Address, Phase rotation, and Meter Type.
In case you want to disable the Sense unit do the following steps:
- Under Installations, go to Zaptec Services and tap Zaptec Sense
- Tap the green toggle to disable Zaptec Sense
- You then need to set the Max charging current in accordance with installation capacity
- Tap Save
Directly measured AMS (Up to 50A)
In the vast majority of cases in detached houses, the AMS electricity meter is directly measured with a CT turnover ratio of 1:1, i.e. that the measured electricity is the same value as that sent out on the HAN port. If this ratio is not 1:1, the reading from the HAN port will not be correct, and it must be corrected with a scaling factor that is entered in power management for APM in Zaptec Portal.
Indirectly measured AMS current meters (From 50A)
If the AMS current meter is indirectly measured (> 63A Main fuse) or if there is a different ratio of data values output on the HAN port on the AMS current meter than read/measured, the correct CT turnover ratio on the meter transformer must be corrected with a scaling factor that is entered in power management for in Portal.
The scaling factor is the difference between the primary side and the secondary side on the måletrafo. Some AMS sensors require a scaling factor to be applied to measurements to get the correct value.
- CT turnover ratio 100:5 = Scaling factor 20
- CT turnover ratio 50:1 = Scaling factor 50
Please refer to the AMS documentation for the correct scaling factor for the installed hardware.
AMS smart meters
There are several different manufacturers of AMS power meters on the market. This varies according to geographical location and grid company. In Norway, all grid companies are required to offer installation and metering point owners access to their meters and consumption data from the AMS power meter. Most often via HAN-port (Home Area Network).
The IEC 62056 standards for electricity metering - Data exchange for meter reading,
tariff and load control.
“This standard follows the principles described in IEC 62056-1-0. In particular, it specifies how the data model of IEC 62056-6-2 is used to configure
the local data transmission. It is assumed that the interfaces support the application
layer services of IEC 62056-5-3 and therefore data transmission features the full
functionality of DLMS/COSEM (e.g. well defined encoding of all attributes defined in
IEC 62056-6-2, security tools defined in 62056-5-3). Different communication profiles
covering a variety of physical interfaces are considered.”
Some smart meters have certain specifications that must be taken into account when installing the Sense. In Norway Kamstrup, Kaifa/Nuri, and Aidon are most commonly used. If you set up the Sense and do not get the correct measurements it can be due to the type of e-meter.
Kamstrup needs an external power supply by using the micro-USB input. Regular phone charger 5VDC with Micro USB-B connector can be used. If you connect the Sense to Kamstrup AMS without using an external power supply you might notice that it restarts every other min. This is because the HAN port on Kamstrup AMS current meters does not deliver sufficient current.
Kamstrup's meters do not have the HAN module built in, but most likely it was installed when changing to a smart meter, or it can be sent to you by mail free of charge. The HAN module is a transition to the RJ45 connector, which most third-party suppliers use to connect to the meter.
For Nuris meters you will only have to activate the HAN port, The HAN module is built in and all equipment can be connected directly to the meter behind the small cover on the left.
Kaifa model MA304T3 does not have the L2 measurement according to its spec. This is an AMS with external current measurement probably less used in private homes.
Aidon AMS for IT3-fase does not provide the L2 measurement. On this AMS the Sense estimates the value based on power and L1 and L3 currents. The estimate is not completely precise in all cases and will sometimes overestimate. Most AMS types provide current measurements on all three phases.
We are currently looking into if this is something we can fix remotely through FW on the Sense.
Alternatively, the installer could rewire from 3-phase to 1-phase, but then you must be absolutely certain that it is the wired with phase 1 and 3 on the AMS that are used on N and L1 on the charger. In addition, the charger must be re-configured in the app so that it reports grid type IT1phase and indicates the phase pair 1/3.
